DUBAI (Reuters) – A U.S. citizen who initially faced as much as seven years in prison for stealing police handcuffs was freed after spending 28 days in a Dubai jail, a police spokesman said on Wednesday.
Adam Foster, 30, was arrested in February when customs officers spotted the handcuffs in his baggage at Dubai airport as he was leaving. Foster said he found the handcuffs on the ground at a shopping mall parking lot.
"He had been accused of stealing, then given a month-long jail term and released when his sentence was up," said police spokesman Saeed Amin. "The law is the law."
Foster's lawyer had said police accused the American of stealing the handcuffs from a police officer when he was questioned and released in a separate case. The latter was reported to be connected to alcohol possession.
Foster told a local newspaper his experience in the UAE jail "wasn't as bad" as he thought it would be.
"The guards were fine, but the food was awful," he was quoted as saying by the National newspaper.
